Tamil Nadu Food Minister said – Center should help concession to migrant card holders
Chennai / South India. Following the announcement by Tamil Nadu Cooperative Minister Sellur K Raju to implement the ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ scheme in the state soon, Food Minister R Kamaraj has said that the Center should provide assistance to the state to give concession to migrant card holders needed.
Addressing a press conference, the food minister said, migrant workers working in the state should also not go hungry and hence the central government will have to provide support for them. Whatever the center gives, we will provide these migrant workers.
While addressing the apprehensions among the existing card holders, the minister also assured that the existing public distribution system in Tamil Nadu will not be hampered by inclusion in the central scheme.
He said, in our PDS system we are giving rice and wheat. Pulses and oil are given at a subsidized rate. We provide sugar to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card holders and ration card holders for Rs 13.50 and Rs 35 respectively. Additionally, we also have a free rice scheme launched by the late former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. This is our state plan and does not apply to other states.
Explain that ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ is an inter-state ration card portability scheme proposed by the Modi government, which allows migrants to get their ration from any public distribution system (PDS) across the country.
The Center intends to expand the scheme to all states by 2020. Currently, Tamil Nadu provides 20 kg of free rice per month to about 1.99 crore ration card holders. The free rice scheme has been in operation since 2011.
Kamaraj raised the same demands before the central government during the food ministers’ conference of various states in Delhi on Tuesday. On the other hand, Cooperation Minister Sellur K. Raju said, according to the information that we have received, if a migrant person (from another state) comes to our state and wants to buy that item, then according to the law in that state, according to the system they Can purchase items here.
