Mythology related to Holi
Many stories related to Holi are found in the history-puranas; Like the legends of Hiranyakashipu-Prahlad, the pastimes of Radha-Krishna and the story of the demonic Dhundi etc.
There is a tradition of burning Holika Dahan a day before Rangwali Holi. Holika Dahan is performed on the full moon day of Falgun month, remembering the victory of good over evil. According to the legend, Prahlad, the son of Asura Hiranyakashipu, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, but this did not suit Hiranyakashipu at all.
He entrusted the task of turning the child Prahlad away from the devotion of God to his sister Holika, who had a boon that fire could not burn his body. Holika entered the fire with the intention of killing the devotee Prahlad, taking him in her lap, but Holika herself got burnt in the fire as a result of Prahlad’s devotion and grace of God. There was no damage to Prahlad’s body in the fire.
Rangwali Holi is also celebrated in the memory of the sacred love of Radha-Krishna. According to the story, once Bala-Gopal asked Mata Yashoda why she was not as fair as Radha herself. Yashoda jokingly told him that by rubbing color on Radha’s face, Radha’s complexion would become like Kanhaiya’s. After this Kanha played Holi with colors with Radha and the gopis and since then this festival is being celebrated as the festival of colours.
It is also said that due to the curse of Lord Shiva, a demon named Dhundi was driven away by the people of Prithu on this day, in whose memory Holi is celebrated.

In some places such as in Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, Rangpanchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Holi, which is played more loudly than the main Holi. This festival is celebrated with great pomp in the Braj region. Especially the Lathmar Holi of Barsana is very famous. In Mathura and Vrindavan too, Holi is celebrated for 15 days.
In Haryana, there is a tradition of harassing the brother-in-law by sister-in-law. In Maharashtra, there is a tradition of playing with dry gulal on the day of Rang Panchami. Holi is the biggest festival for the tribals of South Gujarat. Folk songs are very popular in Chhattisgarh and Bhagoria is celebrated in Malvanchal.
